Fall trends to add to your business travel wardrobe

Keeping up with each season’s changing trends can be hard, not to mention time consuming and expensive. The fashion world seems so out there, but most of us have to dress for the real world. This goes double for work—your job is not necessarily the best place to go crazy on the latest styles. That being said, there are ways to incorporate your favorites into your existing wardrobe without turning into a fashion victim. Here are a few of my picks from this season that are great for business travel.

fall trends

  1. Gray. The hottest neutral for fall is gray. It’s softer than black and goes with everything. The good news is that you probably have some gray pieces already! As seen in Harper’s Bazaar, the runways show a monochromatic look—one of the few runway looks that actually work for real life. If gray isn’t a great color for you, try wearing gray just on the bottom, keeping the it away from your face. Whatever your approach, here are a few pieces to try: the Old Navy blazer in Dark Charcoal Gray (pictured, 1) or Banana Republic Sloan-Fit ankle pants in Gray.
  2. Plaid. The plaid look that is hot this fall is a simpler plaid, with only two or three colors. While head-to-toe plaid isn’t always a great look, it’s simple to incorporate a single piece like a jacket, skirt, or shoes. The size of the print doesn’t seem to matter, just the simplicity of the color scheme. I love this Bobeau Plaid Midi Skirt (pictured, 2). For more conservative offices, a black blazer and nude shoes would be lovely. If you’re in a more business casual environment, try a chambray shirt and contrasting bracelet.
  3. Leopard. Animal prints are back in a big way, but can be a tricky look to pull off in the office. I feel most comfortable using leopard as an accent, in shoes or a belt, rather than in larger doses (like these fabulous d’orsay flats from Alice+Olivia, pictured, 3). If you are feeling bold try something a big bigger like this jacket from Ann Taylor. When going the bold route I recommend keeping the rest of the outfit simple.
  4. Peacock. Don’t worry about the colder-weather blahs—the colors this season are gorgeously saturated. Emerald and burgundy are going to be big, but the hottest is bold peacock (which just happens to be my favorite). Sapphire hues can be worn with purple, green, yellow, red, and certain shades of pink. One of my favorite color combos is blue and mustard yellow, but it also looks lovely with black and white. This peacock Ann Taylor sweater dress is gorgeous and would be great for business travel with gray flats and a colorful necklace. Another option is adding a blazer to my summer go-to business travel outfit of blue slacks with a black and white peplum top.

Yes, it can be tricky to incorporate the latest season’s trends into your business travel wardrobe. But start small with the fashions that feel right to you!

Readers, what are your favorite fall fashions? Are you integrating anything else into your existing wardrobe?
