Keep your hair to yourself during travel

a black and silver hair brushYou may read this and think, travel etiquette…for hair? Don’t people know to that it’s common sense to keep your hair to yourself during travel?

One might hope so, but every trip I see people out there who need a little help in the etiquette department. So here are a few tips for how to manage your hair on an airplane.

Keep your hair in your own space. If your hair is so long that it’s infringing on someone else’s personal space, please pull it up or back. Last week I saw a woman rest her head against her seat and spill her long hair across the back of the headrest. The man behind her was watching TV and it covered most of the screen. Please don’t do this! There is no reason for your hair to invade others’ space.

Don’t brush your hair while seated. In a normal situation brushing your hair in public isn’t that big of a deal. However, on planes the air vents are so powerful that they blow stray hairs onto the people behind you. After long-haul flights in coach I wait until I’m in the lav to brush my hair for this exact reason.

Don’t spray stuff on your hair. I’m very much anti-spraying anything on a plane, so this shouldn’t be a surprise. But please wait until you are either in the lav or off the plane to spray anything on your hair. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve gotten a face full of hair spray from a few rows up!

If you’re not sure what to do with your hair during transit, a few of my favorite styles that keep my hair out of my way (and everyone else’s way!) are:

Readers, what do you do with your hair during travel?
