Inconceivable: Princess Bride themed shirt freaks out passengers and crew in New Zealand

a movie cover with a woman in a crown and a man in a dressLast year I posted about my top 5 movies. Number one on the list was (and will always be) The Princess Bride. It’s my favorite movie of all time, and I watch it often. My younger sister and I used to watch it and compete to see who could say a line first (I bet watching it with us was super fun. not.). I watched it while I was getting ready for my wedding, and while I was in labor. So now that you know how much I love this movie, you get how any news story related to it catches my eye. Add travel to that mix, and it’s irresistible!

From NBC Travel Kit:

Mullins was wearing a shirt adorned with the image of a giant name tag with the slogan: “Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die.”

Fans of the ever-quotable 1987 fantasy romance, “The Princess Bride,” will recognize it as one of the best-known lines from the film, but travelers on board the flight apparently found it threatening, Mullins told Stuff, a news outlet in New Zealand.

One of the flight attendants asked him to change, but he said he didn’t have anything else to put on. She went to try to find him something but couldn’t, so he wore it the whole flight while she “avoided eye contact with him for the rest of the flight.”

So okay. Obviously if you’ve lived under a rock for the last 25 years and haven’t heard of the movie, I can see how it would be off-putting. And since Mr. Mullins wasn’t inconvenienced in any way, this is kind of a non-story. Except for its relation to the best movie of all time, of course.

By the way I so love the beginning paragraph to this article:

He didn’t try to sneak shrieking eels past security or channel the menace of Dread Pirate Roberts, yet a recent flight turned into the Pit of Despair for a passenger with a fondness for “The Princess Bride.”

And….queue Princess Bride quote-off. The comments of the NBC article are pretty funny. Of course, I think anything related to this movie is incredibly fun. Also I kind of want this t-shirt now. And I just spent a LOT of my day watching Princess Bride videos.

If you haven’t seen this movie, you are missing out. Go watch it this weekend! Fun for the whole family.

Readers, have you seen it? What’s your favorite line? Or if it’s too hard to pick a favorite, how about the first one that pops into your head?

Have fun storming the castle!

Comments

  1. LOVE that movie. i saw that news story too and wondered how any adult wasn’t familiar with it.

what about the r.o.u.s’s? rodents of unusual size, i don’t think they exist.

inconceivable! i do not think it means what you think it means.

  2. Bye kids, have fun storming the castle! … I hear it from people born after 1987, so that’s no excuse. Grr.

I’ve always liked the description of “To the Pain” too…dear god what is that THING!

  3. Even my 9 year old has seen this movie! It”s inconceivable that people didn’t recognize the quote. I love when the prince sniffs the wine cup and is able to identify the colorless and odorless iocane powder. And the look on Fred Savage’s face when he asks, “Is this a kissing book?” is priceless.

  4. Regardless of the movie, wearing a shirt that says “Prepare to die,” on an airplane is probably not a good idea.

  5. It’s probably just some fisherman, out for a pleasure cruise…at night…through eel-infested waters.

    Oh, you mean THIS key?

My daughter will be introduced to it in a couple of years, once she is old enough to appreciate it.

  6. To the airline’s credit, they didn’t call for an immediate removal and detention of the passenger by law enforcement personnel. That’s more the kind of thing to be expected from airline crews of some major airlines closer to home.

  7. In my top 5 all time movies as well. An oft quoted line in my house: “It’s possible….. Pig.” That line happens when Wesley is half dead but is still challenging to fight, and Humperdink says he is bluffing.

  8. “I know something you don’t know…I’m not left handed.”
    “I’m not left handed either!”

  9. Best. Movie. Ever. So. Many. Quotes.
“Rodent’s of unusual size? don’t believe they exist.”
“Sonny, true love is the greatest thing in the world. Except for a a nice M.L.T. – mutton lettuce and tomato sandwich, where the mutton is nice and lean and the tomato is ripe. They’re so perky. I love that.”
“You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.”

  10. My favorite is:

“I just work for Vizzini to pay the bills. There’s not a lot of money in revenge.” Inigo Montoya”

  11. @ ShawnH – that line gets quoted in my house just about weekly, too!

we love this movie and my boys (7 & 9) love it, too.

    Anybody want a peanut?
