5 quality pieces of carryon luggage under $200

Not too long ago I did a post asking readers what their favorite carryon luggage brands were.  When the results were 3-3-15-2tallied Tumi came in with the most votes. Tumi makes great carryon luggage, and while my readers have lots of great things to say about them they can be very expensive (upwards of over $600).  It’s possible to get a quality piece of carryon luggage that still meets most if not all of my criteria, and not break the bank.  Here are my five picks for quality carryon luggage under $200.

  • The Samsonite Luggage Fiero HS Spinner 20. Samsonite came in number two in my post about readers’ favorite carryon luggage brands. This spinner carryon is lightweight, coming in at seven and a half pounds.  Its’ dimensions are 19.5 x 14.5 x 9 inches.  It is hard sided luggage made of polycarbonate and the interior has an interior zipper mesh side pocket and cross straps to keep your items secure.   It also has a TSA-approved integrated lock.  This luggage offers a great warranty program (be sure you are registering your purchase so you’ll be able to take advantage of any of these warranties I mention if needed), and is offered in different colors so that you can choose something that will be easy to identify in the baggage claim area.  When I last checked it was going for $129.99.
  • The Rick Steves’ Rolling Carry-On. If you ever watch Rick Steves’ Europe you know that he knows his travel!  And because of this he has his own line of carryon luggage which I’ve heard lots of good things about.  This rollaboard carryon is lightweight coming in at just over six pounds.  Its dimensions are 20”x13½” x 9″ and is soft sided luggage made of polyester.  The handle locks in two different positions. There are three pockets on the front (small, medium, and large) along with a full-length side zipper compartment (12” x 20”) for something like a jacket.  On the inside there’s an interior zipper mesh side pocket and tie-down straps to keep your items secure.  This luggage offers a great warranty program, and is offered in different colors.  When I last checked it was going for $159.99.
  • The Victorinox Luggage Avolve 2.0 20 inch. I’ve used Victorinox luggage for years and have been extremely satisfied with the results.  This spinner carryon is lightweight, coming in at just over six pounds with dimensions of 20.1 x 13 x 10 inches.  It is soft sided luggage made of polyester.  The handle locks into three different positions (41-inch, 39-inch, and 37-inch).  It has lots of pockets.  The front has a zippered pocket with padded protection for up to a 15.6-inch laptop. At the top there’s a quick-access pocket for things like your airplane ticket.  On the inside it has an interior zipper mesh side pocket and tie-down straps to keep your items secure.   This luggage offers a great warranty program, and is offered in different colors.  When I last checked it was going for $199.99.
  • The Delsey Luggage Helium Aero International Carry On Expandable Spinner Trolley. This spinner carryon is pretty lightweight (considering it’s hard sided luggage) coming in at just over eight pounds.  Its dimensions are 19 x 13 x 9.5   Again, it’s hard sided luggage which is made of polycarbonate.  The handle locks into two different positions (41-inch, and 36-inch).  In the front it has an easy to access compartment with a padded sleeve for a laptop and mesh pockets for things like toiletries and accessories.  The inside has a zipper side pocket and cross straps to keep your items secure.  It also has a TSA-approved integrated lock.  This luggage offers a good warranty program (although not as good as the others), and is offered in different colors.  When I last checked it was going for $144.70.
  • The Travelpro Luggage Maxlite 2 Expandable 20-Inch Spinner.  Coming in at the lowest price this spinner carryon is lightweight coming in at just over seven pounds. Its dimensions are 20 x 14 x 9, and is soft sided luggage made of polyester.  The handle locks into two different positions (38 inch and 41-inch).  It has a large pocket in the front, and on the inside it has an interior zipper mesh side pocket and tie-down straps to keep your items secure.   This luggage offers a great warranty program, and is offered in different colors.  When I last checked it was going for $109.99.

  1. Like I said before, if you are a frequent traveler stay far away from spinner suitcases. The wheels are flimsy and break very easily. They also take up a lot of space that other rolling bags utilize.

  2. I was going to write exactly what Tyler said. The spinners take up valuable packing space. It is getting hard to find 2 wheeled cases nowadays.

  3. At only $140, how can you possibly leave out the bag that pretty much every crew member uses? The TravelPro FlightCrew 4 is built to LAST, baby!

  4. I just picked up the eBags TLS Mother Lode Mini 21″ Wheeled Duffel. It’s got a lifetime warranty and sturdy wheels. But the main thing is that the bag is split and half is a regular suitcase and half is a duffel bag. I’m already a huge fan.

  5. Costco had a Samsonite Hilite 2 piece for 129
a 27 in spinner and a 21 in version in it
The 21 in is quite capacious and is the best carry on I have ever used, except for the B&R BRX 22 that I have.
For the price it is unbeatable

Now Costco has a 3 piece version with a 19 in carryon and 2 large check in pieces that is not quite the same

  6. I use Flight 001 Avonette bag. It is not a spinner, soft and has tons of zippered pockets, etc.

  7. I absolutely appreciate this article but I must ask – did you include the wheels in the dimensions? I have heard that the Avolve comes in at over 22″ tall which is too tall for international carry-on luggage.
    Can you confirm?

  8. @Kate I went by the manufacturers’ stated dimensions. Some include wheels and some don’t, and the inconsistency is honestly annoying. That being said on the Victorinox site they claim the Avolve fits within US guidelines and most international guidelines. My experience with my Victorinox Werks 20″ is that while the wheels poke out a tiny bit it fits well within airline sizers and overhead bins.
