What is duty of care?

a white figure holding a first aid kitWhat happens when you are on an international business trip and there is a natural disaster? What if you get sick and have to go to the hospital? This is where duty of care comes in. While it sounds like some ambiguous legal term that has no real meaning, duty of care is incredibly important for those who travel for work internationally. In a nutshell, it means your company has the responsibility to take care of you when you’re traveling on their behalf. An extremely large, well-known, travel related company that I worked for for many years had a policy of “we don’t reimburse for anything except business expenses.” You get sick while overseas? Oh, that’s too bad. Sorry. You need to get home sooner to get medical attention? File a claim with your insurance.

    I’ve never heard of Duty of Care before, and clearly neither did my former employer
