I haven’t had too many real sticky situations. The worst predicament was when we were in Greece and ran out of cash (and no ATMs in sight!). Most places where we were did not take credit cards, so we were in a bit of a bind. I think my husband *eventually* called our credit card company and we arranged for a cash advance on our credit card – which sounds really simple, but it took us a while to figure it out, and we had to do it in a local bank, complete with paperwork, language barrier, and at least a few minutes of thinking it might not actually happen. Lesson: if you are in a smaller or less traveled area, have enough cash or traveler’s checks on hand (or know where to get some!).
