Congrats on the little one! Would recommend they start by finding the accounts and passwords they already have from previous credit cards and vacations, and enter them all into a place like Award Wallet. It helps make them more confident that they can track things and not keep forgetting.

Credit card sign up bonuses. Devour them.
The best advice for someone just starting to chase miles and points is to read as much as you can about the process; don’t go in blind and spread yourself too thin. Also, every mile counts. Rack in bonus points no matter how small.
Establish good credit and read Flyertalk for your favorite airline(s)
Get a mileage card and start by paying your monthly bills and memberships with the card. The best place to start is with what you already have to pay. Don’t start with a new card AND worrying about getting and finding new expenses use what is already there.

Don’t get too sucked in. Remember it is the means to an end.
Five years is a long time. But, pessimisim aside, we are all going to keep finding ways to travel the world through incredible deals. Especially by communicating great finds instantly throughout our unique, if diverse and sometimes fragmented, community. Its always going to be too hard for the average traveller to follow this fastinating pursuit.
Make the best use of your credit card applications and spending as you can.
Find a mentor! This might be difficult at first, but after attending a few frequent flyer events it shouldn’t be too difficult to make some friends with a great deal of knowledge.

Do your research. Don’t just jump in and apply for any offer out there. Figure out the best offers and which miles and points best fit your needs.
