What’s the best way to pack for an overnight business trip? Reader J asks….
I’ve been following your blog for a while now even though I don’t usually travel for work. I find your travel tips very helpful in general. I’m traveling this Wednesday (Oct 1) for an overnight conference. I fly on Wed afternoon and will attend a networking reception and dinner that evening. The next day, I will attend the all day conference and travel home. Any suggestions on outfit that would work for both days? I’m thinking one of your – one dress two ways – could work. Or, should I just plan on pants for one day and a dress/skirt for day 2?
Great question! Sometimes packing for a short trip can be daunting. Do you take only as much as you need? Or do you bring a few extra things, since you will likely have room in your suitcase?
My recommendation is to take an outfit for each day. The biggest reason is that I am a klutz and would totally spill something on my dress—and it’s practically guaranteed if I have to wear it both days! If you’re trying to minimize what you bring then wear a dress on the plane that would work for your reception and then pack a different dress to wear the next day. I love jersey or ponte knit dresses for travel days (and for conferences)—they are so comfortable, pack well, and tend to hold their shape well even after a long day.
For the first day, I would recommend adding fun jewelry (like this dramatic tassel necklace) for the networking dinner. When you go to the conference the next day, don’t forget a pashmina since conference halls are known for frigid temperatures. Of course, slacks and a shirt would also be a perfectly fine option for the second day, I just love dresses! Add some PJs, your toiletries, makeup, and hair supplies, and you will be good to go.
Right now I wear my Dobbin Nora dress all of the time and would recommend any of their ponte knit dresses for travel. A few other options: a plum Nanette Lepore dress (pictured), a fun houndstooth print from Lauren Ralph Lauren, and a lovely plus-size option from Jessica London.
Readers, what do you pack for a quick-two day trip?
