We are entering the rainy season, and boy some parts of the US are getting hammered. How can business travelers handle all of the details of their work trips and torrential downpours? Reader S asks….

I’m slated to travel across the country for work over the next few months, from Seattle to the midwest to Boston. I know I will encounter rain somewhere, probably lots of places. How do I plan for it so I can stay professional?

Great question! Business travel can be complicated already–adding rain to the mix can feel a little overwhelming. Luckily there are some ways to prep for traveling to rainy destinations that allow you to arrive at work unruffled and looking professional.

But April showers bring May flowers! Right? At least we can hope…..

Here are some tips for managing rain on a business trip:

• Give yourself extra time. Driving through rain on unfamiliar streets can be scary, especially if you’re running late. Make sure there is enough time to go as slow as needed.
• Keep an umbrella in your suitcase or purse at all times. Just because rain isn’t forecast when you’re packing doesn’t mean it won’t arrive when you get there! This time of year I have an umbrella in my purse at all times.
• Take a packable raincoat. If the chances of rain are high at your destination take a good, packable raincoat. If you’re traveling a lot during the rainy season then keep it in your suitcase with your umbrella. Try to find one with a hood, which will keep your hair and skin more protected.
• Boots are best. When you’re splashing through flooded parking lots ballet flats don’t cut it! Rain boots are great (and affordable), and you can pack your regular shoes to change into when you arrive. I will often just wear my regular non-rain boots (that have been waterproofed) if it’s more drizzle than flood.
• Wear a dress or skirt. If your legs or tights get splattered they will dry faster than slacks and keep you looking your professional best. During cold rain a dress, heavy tights, and boots are your best bet for staying dry and warm.
• Make sure you plan for a hairstyle that doesn’t mind water. My curly hair gets very frizzy when it rains so I just do a top knot. I also have waterproof mascara in my makeup bag just for rainy or humid days.  If possible, take a minute or two in the ladies’ room once you arrive to repair any damage the rain made.
